Topical authority is what separates 'a site with content' from 'the source engines cite.' This guide is the operational system: how to map clusters, build internal linking, and sustain the cadence that earns authority over 6–18 months.
Topical authority is a system, not a score
There's no single 'authority' number. Engines infer authority from clusters of densely-linked, frequently-refreshed pages on a coherent topic. Build the system; the metric follows.
Map clusters before publishing
Pick three to five core topics for the next 12 months. For each, draft a pillar page plus 8–15 cluster pieces. Don't publish a single piece until the cluster map is complete — fragmented publishing is the #1 reason topical authority stalls.
Internal linking is the authority signal
Every cluster piece links to the pillar with descriptive anchor text. The pillar links out to all cluster pieces. Cluster pieces cross-link where relevant. Aim for 8+ internal links per cluster piece.
Refresh cadence sustains authority
A static cluster decays. Refresh the pillar quarterly and rotate three to five cluster pieces per week through your refresh workflow. The cadence is what compounds.
Expand winning clusters, retire losing ones
After 90 days, double down on clusters showing citation growth. Retire or merge clusters that show no traction. Discipline matters more than ambition — three strong clusters beat ten weak ones.
Measure authority by citation, not vanity
The right KPI is 'how often are we cited as the authoritative source for this cluster's queries.' Track in your AI visibility monitoring system; report in the weekly scorecard.
