What are UTM parameters?

UTM parameters are small tags appended to URLs (utm_source, utm_medium, utm_campaign, utm_term, utm_content) that analytics platforms read to attribute traffic to a specific source, channel, or creative. They are how you separate Facebook paid social from organic, or a newsletter blast from a paid ad.

UTM naming best practices

Stay lowercase. Use hyphens to separate words. Pick a small taxonomy for utm_medium (cpc, email, paid-social, referral, organic) and never deviate. Reserve utm_campaign for the promotion or launch, not the channel. Document your conventions so the whole team tags consistently.

Common UTM mistakes

Mixing capitalization (Facebook vs facebook creates two rows in analytics). Using spaces. Tagging internal links (it overwrites the original session source). Forgetting utm_medium. Inventing a new medium for every campaign instead of standardizing.

Campaign attribution explained

Attribution is the link between a click and a business outcome. Clean UTMs make the click side of attribution trustworthy so dashboards, reports, and ROAS calculations actually mean something. Garbage tags in, garbage decisions out.

Questions marketers ask
Is the UTM Builder free?

Yes. You can build, validate, and copy UTM-tagged URLs without an account, and save up to 5 campaigns locally.

Do I need to tag every link?

Tag external campaigns (ads, email, social, affiliates). Never tag internal navigation — it resets the original session source in analytics.

Can I import campaigns in bulk?

Bulk add and CSV export are available now. CSV import and project-synced libraries unlock on the Pro plan.

How does this fit with SEO?

Organic traffic doesn't need UTMs, but launches, newsletters, and partnerships do — and a clean tagging system makes your SEO reporting comparable to paid.
