The Local SEO Optimization Guide
Local SEO is two games played at once: ranking in the map pack (Google Business Profile) and ranking in the local organic results below it. This guide covers both, with the workflow we use for service-area businesses and brick-and-mortar.
Google Business Profile is the foundation
Complete every field, choose the most specific primary category, add secondary categories sparingly, upload geotagged photos monthly, and post weekly updates. Profile completeness is a direct ranking factor in the map pack.
NAP consistency across the web
Name, Address, Phone — identical everywhere. Citation inconsistency is the #1 reason local rankings stall. Audit the top 30 directories quarterly and clean up duplicates.
Reviews drive both rankings and clicks
Velocity matters more than volume. Aim for steady review flow (5–10/month for a small business), respond to every one (positive and negative), and never gate or filter requests.
On-page local signals
City and neighborhood in title, H1, and first 100 words. Embed a Google Map. Add LocalBusiness schema with full address, hours, and geo coordinates. Build a unique page per service-area city — never one 'Service Areas' page listing 40 cities.
Local content that ranks
City-specific landing pages, neighborhood guides, local case studies, and answers to the 'near me' queries your customers actually search. Avoid the spammy 'best plumber in [city]' template applied 40 times.

Frequently asked questions
How long does local SEO take to work?
GBP improvements can move map-pack ranking in weeks; citation and review work compounds over 3–6 months.
Do I need a physical address?
For map-pack ranking yes, but service-area businesses can hide the address while still appearing for nearby queries.
How do I rank in multiple cities?
Build a unique, substantive landing page per city — not a templated doorway page. Each must have local content, testimonials, and ideally a physical or contact presence.
