The AI Search Optimization Checklist
AI search rewards a small set of structural decisions consistently applied. This checklist is the operational version: every item is something you actually do on a page, not a vague principle. Use it before publishing and during every refresh.
Before publishing
Confirm the primary entity is named in the title, H1, and first 100 words. Each H2 has an answer-ready paragraph of 40–60 words directly underneath. Schema (Article / FAQ / HowTo) is in place and validates. Internal links from at least three relevant cluster pieces are queued.
On the page itself
Lists and steps are real lists, not prose. Author has a named credential. At least one original example, data point, or first-party observation appears. Definitions and key facts are quotable — short, complete, and standalone.
Around the page
Three to five internal links point in from related cluster pieces. The page links out to the pillar with descriptive anchor text. Canonical tag is correct. Page is submitted to Search Console for indexing.
After publishing
Track position weekly for the first month. Track AI citations weekly across at least three engines. Log to the weekly scorecard. Add the page to the refresh queue with a 90-day review date.
Ongoing operations
Refresh every 90–180 days based on performance. Re-validate schema after every CMS or template change. Re-check internal links when adjacent cluster pieces are added or retired. Continuity is the moat.
